Senior Advisor
Thorfinnur Omarsson is a senior communications and media professional with more than three decades of experience spanning international organisations, EU institutions, advocacy organisations and leading media outlets.
He has held high-level communication roles at the OECD in Paris and at the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in Brussels, where he led media relations, acted as organisational spokesperson, developed strategic communication frameworks and oversaw major publications, digital platforms and high-profile events. His background includes senior editorial and broadcast positions as TV anchor, news editor and Editor-in-Chief in Iceland, as well as spokesperson roles in complex international settings, notably with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, where he engaged regularly with global media such as CNN, BBC and Al Jazeera. He combines strong journalistic judgement with hands-on expertise in digital media production, crisis communication and strategic messaging.
In parallel, Thorfinnur has extensive experience in EU advocacy and public affairs communication, working at the heart of Brussels-based organisations engaged with EU policymaking. At Caritas Europa and the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE), he developed and implemented advocacy-driven media strategies aimed at influencing EU institutions, coordinated pan-European communications networks, and represented organisations in high-level policy debates, conferences and the European Parliament. His work consistently focused on translating complex policy issues into clear, compelling narratives for decision-makers, stakeholders and the public. Supported by advanced academic training in journalism, European affairs and international business, and fluent in multiple European languages, he brings a deep understanding of EU processes, institutional dynamics and the strategic role of media in shaping policy outcomes.
