For the second consecutive year, Portugal was awarded the distinction of Europe’s Leading Destination at the World Travel Awards 2018. Along with Portugal, also nominated n this category were the countries Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
The Portuguese Secretary of State for Tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho, was present at the ceremony and took the opportunity to refer that “receiving the «Oscar» for the Best European Destination, for the second consecutive year, is something that makes us proud and proves that Portugal remains at the top of the preferences of international tourists.”
Still, this was not the only prize the country has received during this European gala. In total, 36 prizes were awarded, among which was included the Europe’s Leading City Destination prize – awarded to the city of Lisbon – and the Leading Island Destination prize – given to the Madeira Island.
Ana Mendes Godinho underlines the importance of the prizes: “These awards show that our strategy is clearly producing results, and the world sees Portugal as an example, which motivate us to continue to work on the qualification of our resources and destinations, extending our touristic offer to the whole territory and to all seasons of the year, making it increasingly sustainable.”
To note that the World Travel Awards first appeared in 1993 to recognize, reward and celebrate excellence among the sectors of the tourism.
