It has been six months since the start of the second Trump administration. During this period, bold statements and actions, both domestically and overseas, have repeatedly disrupted the axis upon which the world had come to rely as routine. This global axis was established by the United States during the post-World War II Cold War era in the interest of itself and the Western world, and the impact of its destruction on the world will only grow over time.

Specifically, the first major change is the damage to the Western alliance framework (including allies and like-minded nations). The negative impact is particularly strong in relations with Europe and Canada, with trust in the U.S. in both regions declining significantly. In the areas of defense and economics, we seem to be entering new territory from which there is no turning back. Second, in the U.S.-China rivalry, the “tariff war” has exposed China’s advantages. The basic reality—that with manufacturing strength comes power—is now clear, making the need for a supply chain that can compete with China a prominent issue within the Trump administration. This is one of the factors that led to the Japan-U.S. tariff agreement.

In light of these geopolitical changes, I believe that expectations for Japan—as a middle power and as a manufacturing nation—will rise. In this column, I would like to discuss these topics further.
