Carmen Basagoiti, Managing Partner of Kreab Spain and Jaime Ponce Huerta, President of the FROB, speak at Encuentros Kreab.
18/11/2019
Jaime Ponce Huerta, President of the FROB, an institution created 10 years ago with the mission of guaranteeing financial system stability talked about the lessons learned by the organisation in the Kreab Meeting, as well as a review of the decade. For Ponce, although the challenges and pending work are still vast, the situation has clearly improved in relation to the country’s financial stability thanks to the massive mobilisation of public resources channelled by the FROB.
Among the different lessons learned, the president of the FROB has highlighted the need for a clear diagnosis, separating institutions’ liquidity problems, in general due to a loss of confidence, from the solvency problems, which are more related to who pays the bill in a hypothetical resolution. In his presentation he pointed out that “the financial sector buys and sells trust” and has highlighted the need to focus on reputational and corporate governance aspects in this sector. In his review, he pointed out the complexity of insolvency proceedings, different in each country within the European framework, and in the Spanish case he mentioned the institutional framework, marked by numerous agencies and authorities.
In conclusion, Jaime Ponce reiterated improvements in terms of the sector’s financial stability and acknowledged the enormous restructuring effort made by entities.
